I am a self-made man with a deep background and a host of broad experiences.  I feel that thoughtful voters will find some connection with my personal record and will relate to the unique qualifications I bring to the table.

  •  Devoted husband to Michele, my bride of 30 years

  •  Father and proud grandparent - and, have the good fortune to be owned by two cats

  •  Raised in a small town in Ohio where my parents taught me the importance of education, self-reliance, and persistence

  •  With no real means of attending college, I enlisted in the US Army at age 17

  •  While still on active duty, I began my lifelong quest for knowledge and self-improvement by attending night school through a local community college

  •  After completing my active duty obligation, I began working as a welder for the Ford Motor Company and was a member of the local UAW

  •  After being laid off  from Ford, I managed a clothing store

  •  I attended the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy and worked for the next 16 years as a state trooper with assignments as a road trooper, accident reconstructionist, and special investigator of major crimes and homicides

  •  Throughout my patrol career, I continued my undergraduate education attending classes whenever and however my schedule would allow, eventually completing an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree (both with honors)

  •  I was accepted into medical school and graduated with a Medical Doctorate degree

  •  While attending medical school, I returned to the US Army as a National Guard officer and have continued to serve as a drilling reservist, currently with the rank of colonel

  • After finishing medical school, I completed my medical training through internship, residency, and fellowship becoming fully credentialed with multiple board certifications

  •  I completed a fellowship at Vanderbilt University and was asked to join the faculty as an attending physician and assistant professor

  •  My tenure at Vanderbilt has been interrupted by multiple combat tours in Iraq and Southeast Asia (in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010, and most recently, 2017 and 2018) with service in both aviation and infantry units and the earning of multiple awards including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for wounds received in action

  •  I have also participated in humanitarian missions to include assignments in Romania and Panama

  •  Graduate - US Army Command and General Staff College

  •  Over 31 years of military service with the US Army Regular, Reserve, and Guard forces

  •  Michele and I are active in several church ministries and I have worked as a Red Cross volunteer

  •  Michele and I are civil war reenactors, history enthusiasts, and members of the Tennessee Historical Society the Tennessee  State Museum, the US Army Historical Society, the 1812 Society, and the Franklin Battlefield Trust

  •  Member - Tennessee Right to Life Foundation 

  •  Member and fellow in several professional medical societies and associations

  •  Member of several military associations as well as the National Rifle Association

  •  Supporter of Tennessee's Family Foundation    

  •  Member - Nashville Striders running club
